Carminatives are herbs used as a natural remedy for digestive complaints. They help to reduce gas and bloating in our gut and contain anti-spasmodic properties, meaning that they are beneficial in relieving abdominal cramps and spasms. This can be particularly useful for IBS sufferers or those with inflammatory bowel disease, as well as for general relief of gas and bloating symptoms.
Some carminative herbs that you may have heard of are peppermint, chamomile, fennel, ginger, cinnamon, rosemary, cardamom, caraway seeds, anise seeds and lemon balm. You can use these herbs in your cooking, add to soups, smoothies or just prepare a simple herbal tea.
